The 4th Hat of a Husband by Big El: The BFF

The term or abbreviation BFF means Best Friend Forever. As a youth, my BFF was a buddy that I played marbles with, rode bikes with, and played hoops with daily. That person was my closest homie! I told them what hurt my feelings, what was wrong in my life, what class I was struggling with and more. Now that was as a youth; but now I am a grown married man.

As a Christian man I have learned that all the things I used to do have changed. Upon getting married, I learned that my wife was my new BFF. At first I was still trying to do all the pre-married activities without her, but I realized with the help of God, that I was creating a void in my marriage. I had this beautiful woman that wanted to hang out with me and be my BFF. Not realizing that her feeling unloved was causing a problem. But God opened my eyes and told me that my wife comes first after Him.

So fellas, let me help you with the order of operation (like in Algebra I): God is first (no ifs, ands, or buts about it) and then your wife is only second to God, but first earthly priority. Gentlemen, just to let you know, my BFF is my Schnuky. Schnuky is a ride or die Godly woman, who is there through thick and thin, ups and downs, even through unemployment. So she deserves to be a priority. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 is a deep and meaningful bit of scripture I rely on to remind me how deep my friendship with my wife is to me. King Solomon wrote the book of Ecclesiastes and I feel that these two verses (when applied to husband and wife as a BFF team) lets you know you can overcome any struggle with God in your life and your BFF (wife). So make sure the title and honor of BFF goes to your wife.

The Word tells us “the two shall become one flesh”. I often translate those words to say we are very close; we finish one another’s sentences because we are one. We are a Godly Union. We read our bibles together. We pray together. We worship together. We love together and God smiles on our friendship. So make your wife your BFF. And ladies, you must also follow these guidelines and be receptive to your husbands wishes to drag you to a game from time to time. Bring a book to the game to keep yourself entertained, but remember: Being a BFF takes sacrifices on all levels from both parties.

Men wear many hats. Men wear your hats proudly and bravely. Allow God to use you to make you the man you are supposed to be in your marriages and your households. Hats off to you!
